THE C. F. FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION, INC.
Scholarship Committee

In the late 1920’s, the club offered scholarships to ranking students of Armstrong High School, and students of the Virginia Union University who made the highest average of any Richmond pupil during the first two years of college. Miss Roberta Randolph and Miss Ada V. Foster (my aunt) were among the first who were successful in receiving $100.00 scholarships each.

In the 1970’s, Astoria past President Richard W. Foster (my uncle) suggested the creation of a scholarship fund. The fund was named in honor of Christopher French Foster (my grandfather), one of the founders and a past President of Astoria. Scholarships have been awarded to deserving students in Richmond area schools every year since the fund’s inception (except during covid).

In 2000, Astoria president Walter Gaines appointed past President James w. Hunt, Jr., to work on creation of a 501c3, tax exempt, scholarship foundation. Past president Hunt was assisted by past presidents Eugene C. Harden, and Alan J. Foster, Sr. The three men worked harmoniously, consistently, and tirelessly researching data and assembling information to complete their task.

On November 27, 2002, the State Corporation Commission of the Commonwealth of Virginia awarded a certificate of incorporation to the Christopher F. Foster Scholarship Foundation, Inc. On December 9, 2002, the Internal Revenue Service established a 501c3, tax exemption for the Christopher F. Foster Scholarship Foundation, Inc. The goal of the CFFSF is to be a resource of funds for scholarships for deserving students. Donations to the foundation are tax deductible.

In the past 20 years, we have given over $66,000 in scholarship donations to high school seniors in the Richmond metropolitan area. We are currently receiving funds from the Astoria's Ways and Means committee (I/2 of profits from their annual fundraising events). In the past, we received funds from the Astoria Ball which we no longer have due to lack of participation.

I am reaching out to my fellow Astorians for recommendations on fund raising initiatives that the foundation could possibly use, and I am also asking those individuals who would like to become members of the C. F. Foster Scholarship Foundation to reach out to me. We currently have a few vacancies that we would like to fill. I am attaching a copy of our brochure so that you see additional information about this great organization and also our bylaws to see if you are interested in joining the foundation.

Finally, we are accepting donations from everyone. so, if you are interested in making a donation, please make the check payable to the C. F. Foster Scholarship Foundation and present to me or our Secretary/Treasurer past president Fennon Henderson.

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about this non-profit organization named after my grandfather.

CELEBRATING A RICH PAST: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FUTURE
Organized August 8, 2001
The remarkable tradition of the Astoria Beneficial Club, Inc. began on August 8, 1901 by 22 men who believed in firm religious values, high moral standards, intellectual growth, civic and social responsibility. Astoria also became a club of vision and recognized that the barriers to full citizenship eventually could be eliminated with patience, planning and timely action.
Astoria has earned a significant place in Richmond’s history because of the vision of its founders. They believed that the barriers to full citizenship could be eliminated with patience, planning and timely action. Their vision became the guiding light for a rich history of pioneer efforts to gain voting rights, equal opportunity employment and to end segregation of public eating facilities. The Astoria creed has inspired outstanding men from every walk of life to "higher moral, intellectual, civic and social standing" for almost a century.

Mental Health in 2026: 7 Key Strategies
Astorian Editorial Submission from Dr. Gerard McShepard, M.S., M.P.H., Ph.D.

In 2026, mental health will remain a top priority, with experts emphasizing intentional routines, self-care, and resilience-building strategies to cope with ongoing stressors. And as I said during my last article, addressing things as it relates to health that will leave you feeling more satisfied, less frustrated, and ultimately will help you improve your well-being and quality of life.

Why Mental Health Matters in 2026 – Mental health challenges are widespread – About 1 in 7 people globally live with a mental health disorder, and in the United States, depression rates remain high. With continued digital demands, work pressures, and social challenges, proactive health management is essential for emotional stability and overall well-being as stated by Total Life Counseling.

Key Strategies for 2026
1.    Set Clear Mental Health Goals
·      45 minutes of movement 3 – 5 times / week
·      Consistent sleep schedule and good sleep hygiene.
·      Weekly mindfulness or breathing exercises.
·      Expressive writing to process emotions.
NOTE: Short-term goals help manage stress; long-term goals build resilience.

2.    Prioritize Sleep and Movement
·      Sleep is critical for stress regulation and mood stability. Maintain a consistent bedtime, keep your environment cool and dark, and avoid screens before bed. Physical activity – even short walks – boosts brain health, mood, and sleep quality.

3.    Make Time for Play and Fun
·      Engaging in playful, low-pressure activities (dancing, building, laughing) reduces stress and increases optimism. Choose analog play to counter digital overload.

4.    Strengthen Your Support Network
·      This is important for seasoned people and I have said this a few times that our Astoria Brothers have been blessed with longevity.
·      Connection is a cornerstone of mental health. Join support groups, participate in community events, or simply reach out to loved ones regularly. Call an Astoria Brother who you have not heard from for a while. Strong relationships buffer against stress.

5.    Practice Mindfulness and Stress Management
·      Mindful conversations, meditation/spend time alone, exercise, learn a new skill, and deep breathing can reduce anxiety and improve focus. Take regular breaks from work or screen time to reset.

6.    Reflect and Let Go of Unrealistic Expectations
·      Gentle self-reflection helps you recognize progress without judgement. Avoid setting rigid, perfectionist goals; instead, focus on ongoing, flexible progress.

7.    Protect Your Boundaries
·      Learn to say “no” to avoid burnout. Set limits on work hours, social media use, and non-essential commitments.

It is important for Astorians to continue to be mindful of our health and we are a unique group of seasoned individuals who continue to stay active in the community.

With constant connectivity and change, proactive mental health planning is key. Schedule “mental health check-ins” like physical exams, dental exams, and integrate self-care into daily routines. When stress or anxiety interfere with daily life, seek professional therapy or counseling. These tips are realistic and should be attainable as we have the plan for all Astoria Beneficial Club members to make it to at least age 100. Don’t neglect your health Brothers because we need you.

Alan Foster Sr.

So proud of my grandfather, my uncle and cousins on the 115th anniversary of the Dominion Medical Association in Jackson Ward. It brings back many memories to me because my parents and I lived in their medical office on the 2nd floor until my father passed and then my mother and I moved in to live with my grandparents, Isaiah Jackson Sr. and Nannie Coleman Jackson on Idlewood Ave. I enjoyed walking through the doctor's office on many, many days!

Hamlet Hood   Those who do not remember (or deny) the past are destined to repeat it! I want to thank my high school and college teachers/professors for forcing me to learn about world history. Especially the period in Germany, between the end of the Great War (Nov. 11, 1918) and 1939. For those who don't know, this was the period when the Munich (Beer Hall) Putsch occurred (Nov. 8-9, 1923) and the violent activities of the Brown Shirts (1921-1945).
The events in recent US history, Jan. 6, 2021, and the recent violent activities by ICE, especially those in Minneapolis, are eerily similar.
I know I will have some individuals attack me for even bringing this up. I hope they do! I'll address them when it occurs.
While they voluntarily ignore history, I still remember it and the oaths I have taken to "defend and protect the Constitution of the United States from all enemy's, FOREIGN and DOMESTIC!"
Before you ask (or judge me) ...No! I do not want illegal immigration. Yes! I support law enforcement. No! I will not support illegal or excessive law enforcement on individuals expressing their Constitutionally protected rights by individuals who obviously have not been trained properly and/or don't care about any individual's inalienable/unalienable rights!
